Best Kayaks for Fat paddlers

I often see big heavy tall or fat paddlers looking for advice on their first kayak so I thought I'd start a list. Feel free to comment if you think something should be added to the list.

Here it is:

Wilderness Systems Pungo 140

Wilderness Systems Tsunami 145

Wilderness Systems Tsunami 175

Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160

Wilderness Systems Ride

Ocean Kayak Scrambler

Ocean Kayak Prowler 15

RTM Midway

RTM Tempo

Valley Aquanaut HV

With the exception of the Ride and the Scrambler, the above boats have a very good reputation for keeping up in group paddles with Sea Kayakers.

I'd be very interested to learn what others think about this list.

  1. Wilderness System Zephyr, swift behaves well in wind. http://penobscotpaddles.blogspot.com/2011/04/903-paddlers-and-1-greenland-paddle.html

  2. Yes, I like the Zephyr, but I have not seen how it fits folks over 300#'s. What do you think? Is it big enough?

  4. I'd also add the Prijon Kodiak and Boreal Design Nanook to this list - both great sea kayaks with loads of room for the bigger paddler but added performance in the rough as well. Cheers - FP

  5. Not sure about over 300#, but 250-300, well over 6 feet should be happy with the Zephyr.

  6. Do you have any suggestions on the best kayaks for really tall and skinny guys? That's the kind of thing that I need. But seriously, I can imagine a lot of them are tough for tall guys like me to get into, any help?

    1. I think I Solstice GTS might be one for you to try If your feet fit it well. Tall paddlers often have big feet and over a size 12 you will have to learn to paddle with your feet tucked forward at an angle.
